I don’t know what has gotten into my ponies lately, but I sure like it!
Just like last raceday, not one pony finished any worse than 3rd. One race day was chalked up to pure luck, two in a row seems a bit more mysterious…but I’m happy to hope that this lucky streak (or whatever you might call it) continues:
2YO filly [color=red]Nicole’s Majic (x A.P. Indy) broke her maiden today after placing a couple of times. Ironically, this was under a brand new jockey - one she has never worked with before (instead of her regular jock). Odd. We may have her start working with this new jockey on a regular basis…
2YO homebred [color=red]Alakazam (x Highland Magic) also broke her maiden today. We changed her equipment thanks to hints from her favorite jockey. I’m hoping that she can keep this up, though, because she had previously never been in the top 3. Fingers crossed.
6YO [color=red]I’m Feelin’ Lucky (created) won her first steeplechase race. I’m super excited to see this, as I made a bit of a blunder when I purchased her - not realizing that the years didn’t add up, and that she’d been sitting in a pasture for 2 years. I’m glad to see that the ol’ gal still has it in her to win, though she will most likely be retired to brood next spring. It’s a shame that she missed out on so much of what would have been her prime, though…but I have faith enough to want to see her babies try to live up to it. Hitting the board with inconsistant training in years 2 through 6 is enough of a feat - a testament to her heart- that she’ll earn an honorary spot in our brood band. Her new SC career is just a bonus.
Having just come off her first stakes attempt, we decided to enter 3YO homebred [color=red]Girlfight (x Nightfight) into a lower class race to help boost her morale back up, and she relished it - bringing home another win.
2YO homebred [color=blue]Star of Lakshmi (x Octagonal) and 2YO [color=blue]Laudri (x Point Given) ran 2-3 in their NW2. Both remain maidens, but this is huge, especially for Lakshmi, who has never been on the board before (he apparently liked the change of equipment suggested by his jockey). Meanwhile, Laudri continues to be inconsistant, but we’re prepared to keep working with him on that…
3YO [color=blue]Dawson’s Rudge (x A.P. Indy) was running strong in the lead during his maiden, 'til his jockey started pulling him up in the last couple of furlongs. He showed determination, though, fighting from 3rd back to 2nd by the finish line before finally submitting to his jockey’s demands. After Macintosh hopped off and inspected his left hind leg, it was found that he’d managed to cut himself pretty badly. We have gone ahead and started him on the journey from California to New York so we can rest him up and give him the best TLC possible.
And last but not least, our homebred 2YO [color=red]Coquette (x Bellagio) ran 2nd in her first stakes attempt, the ungraded Astoria Handicap, against some really impressively bred fillies. That’s huge for us. That’s the 3rd stakes placed 2YO under our ownership now…a feat we have never achieved before, and especially so early on into the season. This crop is looking super promising, and it’s leading me to believe that my methods might actually be working… That, or I’m just having an incredibly lucky year in the game.
