Sent out six, brought home seven.
Mixed results this time.
WINS
[color=red]Holy Smokes (3yo, Holy Bull) seems to have known that I was considering selling her - she won her NW2 and earned a speed record to seal the deal. She has not liked any combination or lack of equipment up to this point (finicky girl, ugh) and has generally been a pain to figure out. Today I threw on a random mix of things she “disliked” on their own. Maybe that helped? Time will tell.
[color=blue]Ch. Cuchulain (4yo, Irish River) won the G1 Mackinnon Stakes at a desirable 10f dirt. WAHOO! This is his third stakes win - he’s undefeated this year. He’s definitely one to watch. I have never had so many potential boys to studify, ever. I’m still waiting to graduate my first one, though.
PLACES
[color=red]GCh. Afterglow (5yo, Affirmed) finished 2nd in an open allowance due to a lack of suitable stakes races. She has only finished in the top two so far this year in all three of her races, and the others were stakes. She’s one of my favorites.
[color=red]Ciao Bella (4yo, Alley Cat) finished 2nd in the ungraded Santa Lucia Handicap, officially making her multi-stakes placed. I’m still trying to convince her that the winner’s circle does not bite. It’s extra frustrating, given her ICh. HOTY mother and ICh. Eclipse award father.
[color=red]Ch. Always Ladylike (4yo, Giant’s Causeway) finished 2nd in the G2 Hotham Handicap in mixed company. For her efforts in this sizzlingly fast paced race, she earned our highest speed factor of the day: 334. She’s a determined mare, and I love her for it. I suspect she will continue to do big things.
OTHER
[color=red]Mango Frappe (5yo, Sunday Silence) is a hard-knocking mare, but maybe not quite stakes quality. Today she finished 4th in the G2 Santa Ana Handicap in a very close finish, where all of the top four were only a nose apart. She’s got heart, even if she doesn’t have the credit of a stakes win or place. I’m glad I held onto her.
We claimed royally-bred [color=blue]Say Hey Kid - a 3yo colt by silver-rated WCh. Double Cross (we didn’t own any of his get) and out of the amazing gold-rated GCh. A.P. Valentino, making him 1/2 to MSW ICh. Worthy Valentine, MSW Ch. Hot Brown, and MSW Ch. Tuscaloosa. In theory, we should be able to make something of this fellow. However, his 5th place finish today in his claiming race shows that it won’t be easy. Maybe he’ll be one of those bluebloods who can’t run their way out of a paper sack. Oh boy.
